Alcohol Warning and Disclaimer
Every container of alcoholic beverage sold in the United States carries a government warning. The wording below is reproduced exactly as federal law requires, and it appears on the labels of the bottles we ship.
Government warning
GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.
What the warning means in practice
The first point concerns pregnancy: no amount of alcohol has been shown to be safe for a developing baby, which is why the warning is stated absolutely rather than as a guideline. The second covers the immediate effects of drinking, including slowed reactions, impaired judgement and reduced coordination, as well as longer-term risks to health from sustained heavy drinking.
Alcohol strength and serving size
A standard US drink contains about 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol, which is roughly a 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12% ABV, or a 1.5 oz measure of 40% spirit. A larger pour, a stronger bottle or a mixed drink built from several spirits can contain considerably more. Reading the ABV on the label is the quickest way to know what you are pouring.
Drinking responsibly
- Measure spirits rather than pouring freely, and use smaller glasses for stronger drinks.
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with water and eat while you drink.
- Do not drink and drive, and do not operate machinery after drinking.
- Keep alcohol away from children and from anyone who has been advised not to drink.
- If you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are trying to conceive, do not drink.
